The First Attempt, Sangatte, July 19, 1909

July 19, 1909, and Hubert Latham is readying for takeoff in an Antoinette IV from Sangatte (Cap Blanc Nez to be precise) for his first attempt to cross the English Channel. Note in the top photo that Latham has a French flag displayed on one of the guy wires – this was presented to him by an English sailor who was on loan to the French navy and was, in fact, part of the crew of the Harpon, the French torpedo frigate that was to accompany Latham on his flight. Where is the flag in the bottom photo?
19 juillet 1909, Hubert Latham se prépare à décoller dans son Antoinette IV monoplan de Sangatte (plus précisément Cap Blanc Nez) pour sa première tentative de traversée de la Manche. Dans la photo du haut, on remarque un drapeau Français accroché à un des cables de retenue. Il lui a été présenté par un marin anglais faisant partie de l'équipage du Harpon, la frégate lance torpille qui a accompagné Latham pendant son vol. Où se trouve le drapeau dans la photo du bas?

Here is a photo taken, after Latham had been picked up, by
a sailor who was in one of the rowboats dispatched by the Harpon.
This photo has been reproduced countless times for postcards.

Latham’s Antoinette secured to the side of the Harpon awaiting transfer to the tug Calaisien for transport back to the port of Calais. It was at this stage that one of Harpon’s sailors jumped onto one of the plane’s wings and went straight through, enraging Léon Levavasseur (who was on board), as he was desperately hoping that the entire plane could be salvaged with little or no damage. He was further dismayed to discover that souvenir hunters in Calais broke into the storage area where the recovered plane was temporarily being held and stripped it of anything and everything that wasn’t screwed down.

C'est à ce moment qu'un des marins du Harpon a sauté sur une des ailes de l'avion et a passé à travers. Léon Levavasseur qui était à bord était furieux parce qu'il espérait récupérer le monoplan sans grands dommages. Il était plus consterné de découvrir que des chasseurs de souvenirs avaient pénétré dans le hangar où se trouvait l'Antoinette et s'étaient emparé de tout ce qui n'était pas vissé.

Photo postcards showing Latham in his brand new Antoinette VII departing for his second attempt. In second card, writer is off by a day – it was July 27, not the 28th. Note the old abandoned Channel tunnel building in the background where the Antoinette crew set up their camp.
